Zandvoort 2018

10 July 2018

It was time for the international round for the Caterham Motorsport championships as our 270R and 310R drivers took to the thrilling Zandvoort circuit on the Dutch coast.

With scorching temperatures and close frantic racing around this slipstreaming circuit competition was exceptionally fierce throughout both grids.

In the 270 Championship Gary Smith picked up a pair of strong 5th places with Race 2 particularly hard fought as he finished only a second off 1st place. Tim Child had a fabulous couple of races to finish just outside the top 10 chased home by Paul Vernon who was recovering from time lost on circuit after a testing incident.

A first lap incident in Race 1 left John Shiveral picking gravel from places there shouldn't be gravel but a charge through the field in Race 2 netted him a top-20 finish. James Elvery also had a gravelly end to Race 1 but drove well in Race 2 in a race long battle.

John Styring drove superbly in the Bookoli sponsored car to a top 20 finish in Race 2 and followed it up with a strong 2nd race effort too. Dave Bullock had his best race weekend of the season with smooth and consistent driving netting him a 15th & 16th in the results.

In the fiercest competitive 310R championship Rob Watts and James Beardwell were up against 30 other competitors in the ultimate evolution of the 1600 car. Contact in race 1 with another car put Watts out of the running and the team with work to do to get him back on to the grid. Starting in 32nd and last place he carved through the field to a fabulous 14th. Beardwell benefitted from other's misfortunes in Race 1 finishing just outside the top 10 and after an off-track excursion ended up P12 for Race 2.

The European round of the championship marks the halfway mark and a chance to regroup before the next round at Castle Combe on the 11th & 12th August. See you there!
